Reporting the Crime

Deb points you to https://www.ic3.gov/Home/ComplaintChoice on your phone. You follow the steps to report the crime to the FBI.

“Here,” says Deb. “I’ve put a copy of snapshot of your machine on this flash drive. When the FBI contacts you, you can give it to them. It will help them track down and stop the people who did this.”

With your project back in hand, most of your files retrieved, and your life back on track, you take new precautions to protect your digital life. Lessons learned the hard way are often the ones best remembered. Your experience with the ransomware serves as a harsh reminder of the vulnerabilities of the digital age, but also of the power of knowledge, community, and resilience.

CONGRATS, YOU DID WELL!

You did pay some money, and there is a better solution out there. While every situation is different, this exercise teaches some valuable lessons about how to handle yourself in a cyber crisis. If you wish to explore different outcomes, play again.
